Best part: Mulan's motivations for running off to join the army have nothing to do with self-pity, petulance, fear of her parents who are probably evil because they don't let her do whatever she wants, to get a man, or even to 'prove' anything to anyone. She goes because it's what's necessary to protect her family's lives and honor. That's it. Sword, armor, horse, boom.
...and a dragon. Granted it's an Eddy Murphy dragon, but it's dragon.
Also, interesting note, Shan Yu, the villain in Mulan, is referenced in Firefly by Book. Probably referencing Chanyu which is a title rather than a person. Book may have been referencing Modu Chanyu, but that's a bit of a stretch.
Regardless of any real world reference. The Shan Yu from Mulan is a unmitigated terror.
